Monkeys of Teerathgarh

Situated bout 35 KM away from Jagdalpur, main city of India's tribal area Bastar, Teerathgarh is famous for its picturesque waterfall, besides being the safe refuge of thousands of red faced monkeys. The lush green forests offer them all that they need- tall trees, running clean water, pollution free environment! People visit to see the fall, also bring the food stuff for them available in the nearby small shops. Recently I got an opportunity to go there. These are comparatively small sized monkeys. Jumping and playing from one tree to another, from one branch to other branch, land to trees and from there climbing the walls was quite fascinating- like revising our childhood!

 This is beautiful waterfall of Teerathgarh, situated 35 KMs away from Jaagdalpur of tribal region Bastar (India). The fabulous scenario is creation of Kanger river of Kanger vally, which plunges from 91 meter height.

मनोरम तीरथगढ़ जलप्रपात

 यह है भारत के धुर आदिवासी बस्तर क्षेत्र में जगदलपुर से 35 किमी दूर रमणीय जलप्रपात- तीरथगढ़! कांगेर घाटी के अंतर्गत आने वाले इलाके में कांगेर नदी का पानी 91 मीटर से गिरकर यह खूबसूरत नजारा पेश करता है।

Village markets are still thriving

 Malls and super markets are comparatively a new phenomenon to the third world. Super markets, malls & big bazaars are coming up in the large number in the growing cities of the country.
 Yet there is another world, in the third world itself! Out of the boundaries of our cities, the villagers and tribal people have created that world. Their needs are md their small bazaars and weekly markets, called as haat. They find here the food grains, vegetables, cosmetics, snacks, biscuits etc.
Here there are no glazed floors; no beautiful sales girls, no smart counter clerks, yet the weekly markets have great social significance. Every haat connects the people of a cluster of villages. Villagers and tribal meet each-other here while doing their shopping.

Recently, I mingled in the crowd of such a weekly haat in a small village, named Binjali, about 15 KMs away from Narayanpur in the tribal are of Bastar (India). I found an opportunity to see an aspect of the life of those people who are leading very simple life; away from the shine of materialistic development. Fulfillment of their small needs bring happiness to them; and the joy they derive from such hats and markets!

अब भी आबाद हैं साप्ताहिक हाट

 मॉल और सुपर मार्केट तीसरी दुनिया की नई सच्चाई है। देश के ज्यादातर बढ़ते शहरों में सुपर मार्केट और महानगरों में मॉल व बिग बाजार खड़े हो रहे हैं।
एक और दुनिया है, इसी तीसरी दुनिया में। शहरों की सीमाओं से बाहर ग्रामीण और आदिवासी लोगों की बसाई, उनकी अपनी दुनिया। जरुरतें अत्यंत सीमित हैं, खरीद की क्षमता भी उन्हें कम पर गुजारा करना सीखा देती है। यहीं आबाद हैं उनके छोटे-छोटे बाजार और हफ्ते में एक बार भरने वाले हाट। अनाज, साग-भाजी, साज-श्रृंगार और छोटी-मोटी खाने की चीजें, बिस्कुट आदि उन्हें यहां मिल जाते हैं।
न तो यहां चमचमाते फर्श हैं, न खूबसूरत सेल्सगर्ल्स और काउंटर पर स्मार्ट क्लर्क, लेकिन इन बाजारों का सामाजिक महत्व है। एक बाजार अनेक गांवों के लोगों को जोड़ता है। खरीद-फरोख्त के बहाने लोगों का मिलना-जुलना भी हो जाता है।
छत्तीसगढ़ के आदिवासी अंचल बस्तर में स्थित नारायणपुर से लगभग 15 किलोमीटर दूर के गांव बिंजली का ऐसा ही हाट देखने को मिला और एक बार फिर अपने उन लोगों के जीवन का एक पक्ष दिख पड़ा, जो विकास की चकाचौंध से दूर बड़ा ही सादा जीवन गुजार रहे हैं। छोटी-छोटी जरूरतों का पूरा हो जाना उनके लिए खुशियां लेकर आता है, और यह खुशी बंटती है, ऐसे ही हाट और बाजारों में।

'Laxmi Jagaar' : True Colour of Bastar

Bastar, the tribal land of India (situated in Chhattisgarh, India), has very rich cultural heritage.
Despite of the 21st century development, the tribal are very well connected to their roots, traditions and socio-religious rituals. Hardship of the life, limited resources & means do not deter these people to observe their age-old traditions. Though the religious faith is the prime reasons to organize the festivals and traditions, it has social significance too. Unlike the economically developed communities, tribal devote their time and energy to community activities in a great deal.
Recently I was in Kondagaon of the same region, where I witnessed 'Laxmi Jagar' (waking up of Goddess of Wealth- Laxmi).
The festival is celebrated in almost all the villages or cluster of villages. The Laxmi is worshipped by the community when the crop of paddy comes home. In an agricultural country of India, new crop means money and food for the whole year. The Goddess is taken in to a procession with music by traditional instrument under the guidance of any priest or senior person! With different rituals and religious act the festival ends up with the final worship at some water body of the village.
It is celebrated with variations in different parts of Bastar.
For an outsider person like me, the festival was not only a cultural bonanza; it's a feast to the eyes, and to the soul!
'Laxmi Lagar' is indeed, one of many colours of Bastar! Colourful and vibrating Bastar!!

'लक्ष्मी जगार': बस्तर का वास्तविक रंग

देश के आदिवासी प्रखंड बस्तर की सांस्कृतिक विरासत अत्यंत समृद्ध है। 21वीं सदी के विकास के बावजूद आदिवासी समुदाय अपनी जड़ों, परंपराओं और सामाजिक-धार्मिक प्रथाओं से जुड़ा हुआ है। उनके जीवन की कठिनाइयां, सीमित संसाधन व अभाव उन्हें अनादि काल से चली आ रही परंपराओं को निभाने से नहीं रोक पाता। वैसे तो इन त्यौहारों व परंपराओं के निर्वाह का प्रमुख कारण उनकी धार्मिक आस्थाएं हैं, लेकिन उनका सामाजिक महत्व भी कोई कम नहीं है। भौतिक रूप से विकसित समुदायों के विपरीत आदिवासी समुदाय सार्वजनिक गतिविधियों में अपना काफी समय और ऊर्जा लगाता है।   हाल ही में मैं इस क्षेत्र के कोंडागांव में था, जहां मुझे 'लछमी जगार ' (लक्ष्मी का जागरण) देखने का सौभाग्य मिला। यह त्यौहार लगभग सभी गांव या गांवों के समूह में मनाया जाता है। धान की फसल घर आने पर इसका आयोजन होता है। कृषि पर आधारित भारत जैसे देश में फसलों का घर आने का सीधा अर्थ है नकदी और वर्ष भर खाने का इंतजाम!
 पुजारी या किसी बुजुर्ग के मार्गदर्शन में लक्ष्मी का पारंपरिक वाद्य यंत्रों के साथ जुलूस निकलता है। विभिन्न प्रथाओं व धार्मिक अनुष्ठानों के साथ गांव के तालाब में इसका पूजा-पाठ के साथ समापन होता है। प्रकारातरों के साथ सारे बस्तर में इसका आयोजन होता है।
मेरे जैसे किसी बाहरी व्यक्ति के लिए यह त्यौहार न सिर्फ सांस्कृतिक सौगात रही, वरन वह आंखों व आत्मा को असीम संतोष देने वाला आयोजन भी था!
'लक्ष्मी जगार ' बस्तर के अनेक रंगों में से एक है, रंगीन और स्पंदित बस्तर!!
